When working with children and young people, they must feel comfortable with me or we will get nowhere fast!
This is one of the reasons I call myself a coach rather than a therapist. A therapist, often in the young person’s mind, is someone to do with serious, and possibly scary, adult stuff. Whereas a coach… well …there’s a football coach, a gym coach …. A coach is usually someone who will help a young person to improve or to show them the rules … someone who is there for self-improvement and fun!
So, to be successful in working with a young person I have to find a common language … so …for example … if you ask a child to show you where in their body their heart is … most can do this from a young age … then ask a child to draw a heart in the air … they can generally do so from a certain age … if you then ask a child to identify where anger .. frustration … sadness … happiness… are in their body … you may well get an answer .. or … you may just get a look of confusion. Ask a child to draw these emotions …. a bit harder still (although most will have a go).
So … how about if we (for the younger children) decide to treat the emotions like super heroes…( I have to say.. the young adults tend to like this too!!) Each superhero serving a purpose … each superhero having a physical form .. a personality perhaps…. perhaps an ability to speak!! And then…. let’s say … that the child is able to squash … stretch … manipulate and ask their superheroes questions!…. able to bring out their other emotions / superheroes .. to help to manage the one superhero emotion that needs some help …. The child / adolescent, through coaching, is encouraged to find their own positive solutions to their difficulty.
